Some tips from our designers
A very important question that has to be considered is the design of the other furnishings and fittings. Choice of floor, for example, is often very significant. An oak floor signals a particular feeling that it may be desirable to repeat in the choice of wood for the stairs. Or perhaps to create exciting contrasts it may be preferable to offset the dark floor with a much lighter stair colour.
With the aid of paint, glaze/stain and various combinations of material other furnishings in the home may be echoed in the staircase. If the staircase is to be directly adjacent to a kitchen of oiled birch, then why not build it of the same material. Or why not combine it with polished steel spindles and steel orbs on the newels, or perhaps finish the strings in white.
